February 3, 2025 — Dramatic readings by acclaimed actors from conflicting historical accounts of Philadelphia’s 1793 yellow fever epidemic will spark a guided audience discussion on America’s current health inequities, in A REFUTATION, with two performances in February in Washington, DC.

On November 19, 2024, The Greenwall Foundation and New York University’s School of Global Public Health will host this year’s William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture in person in New York City and online. Beth Macy, bestselling author of Dopesick and Raising Lazarus: Hope, Justice, and the Future of America’s Overdose Crisis, will discuss the US opioid epidemic and the ethical issues that accompany it, including how we can move forward from the crisis and rebuild affected communities. Ms. Macy will be joined in conversation by Perri Peltz, a journalist, public health advocate, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker known for the HBO documentary Warning: This Drug May Kill You, which explores the devastating effects of opioid addiction and its relationship to big pharma.

Usha Lee McFarling, National Science Correspondent at STAT, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Bernard Lo, MD Award in Bioethics. The award recognizes Ms. McFarling for her role in shaping the public discussion and policy debate about bioethics and equity in healthcare and research. It conveys a cash prize of $25,000.

How can bioethics researchers get their findings into the hands of those who shape policy? What gaps separate research and policy, and how can stakeholders navigate them? How can researchers and policymakers better communicate with and relate to each other? On Monday, June 17, 2024, The Greenwall Foundation will host a webinar will explore these questions and more as we discuss approaches to increase bioethics’ impact on policymaking.

On November 14, 2023, The Greenwall Foundation presented the William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture at Columbia University’s Pulitzer Hall. The event, in partnership with the Columbia University Division of Ethics, featured an insightful dialogue between Dr. Gary Belkin, a psychiatrist and public health expert, and NPR and PBS reporter Michel Martin. The Lecture centered on Dr. Belkin’s perspective on mental health, not merely as an individual concern but as one intertwined with social policy and community wellbeing.

Lisa H. Harris, MD, PhD, has been named the recipient of The Greenwall Foundation’s 2023 Bernard Lo, MD Award in Bioethics. The Lo Award recognizes Dr. Harris for forging connections across division through bioethics. It conveys a cash prize of $25,000.

With the federal COVID-19 public health emergency over, many of the bioethics questions raised during the pandemic remain. What can we take away from bioethics research from the pandemic as we move forward? Rethinking Automation and Inequity in Healthcare. The conversation featured Ruha Benjamin, PhD, Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, along with Meghna Chakrabarti, host of WBUR’s award-winning show On Point.
