Robert Califf, MD, former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Instructor in Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University School of Medicine, will discuss the growing crisis of trust in science, medicine, and public health—and the ethics challenges and opportunities it presents for shaping policy and practice in uncertain times. Dr. Califf will be joined in conversation by Matthew Herper, an award-winning journalist and Senior Writer covering medicine at STAT.

The Greenwall Foundation is thrilled to announce the recipient of the 2025 Bernard Lo, MD Award in Bioethics, Ruth R. Faden, PhD. The award recognizes Prof. Faden, founder of the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University and Philip Franklin Wagley Professor of Biomedical Ethics, for excellence in bioethics mentorship. In acknowledgement of this work, Prof. Faden will be awarded a cash prize of $25,000.

The Greenwall Foundation is pleased to announce its upcoming webinar, “A Bioethics Conversation: Autism Care and Research,” which will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 2 p.m. ET. The webinar will bring together panelists with three distinct perspectives—Zuzana Kazan; Brent M. Kious, MD, PhD; and Joel Michael Reynolds, PhD—to reflect on ethics issues in autism care and research and consider how bioethics can move the conversation forward. February 3, 2025 — Dramatic readings by acclaimed actors from conflicting historical accounts of Philadelphia’s 1793 yellow fever epidemic will spark a guided audience discussion on America’s current health inequities, in A REFUTATION, with two performances in February in Washington, DC.

On November 19, 2024, The Greenwall Foundation and New York University’s School of Global Public Health will host this year’s William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture in person in New York City and online. Beth Macy, bestselling author of Dopesick and Raising Lazarus: Hope, Justice, and the Future of America’s Overdose Crisis, will discuss the US opioid epidemic and the ethical issues that accompany it, including how we can move forward from the crisis and rebuild affected communities. Ms. Macy will be joined in conversation by Perri Peltz, a journalist, public health advocate, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker known for the HBO documentary Warning: This Drug May Kill You, which explores the devastating effects of opioid addiction and its relationship to big pharma.

Usha Lee McFarling, National Science Correspondent at STAT, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Bernard Lo, MD Award in Bioethics. The award recognizes Ms. McFarling for her role in shaping the public discussion and policy debate about bioethics and equity in healthcare and research. It conveys a cash prize of $25,000.

The event, in partnership with the Columbia University Division of Ethics, featured an insightful dialogue between Dr. Gary Belkin, a psychiatrist and public health expert, and NPR and PBS reporter Michel Martin. The Lecture centered on Dr. Belkin’s perspective on mental health, not merely as an individual concern but as one intertwined with social policy and community wellbeing.
