Governance Changes at The Greenwall Foundation

In May, The Greenwall Foundation celebrated the contributions of retiring members of its Board of Directors and Faculty Scholars Program Committee and welcomed a new member to the FSP Committee.

Joel Motley, JD, and Richard L. Salzer, MD, are departing the Board of Directors after 12 and 42 years of service, respectively. Christine Grady, PhD, exits the FSP Committee following a six-year tenure.

As Board Secretary and Chair of the Audit and Risk Management Committee, Mr. Motley brought decades of financial, legal, nonprofit, and corporate experience that drove forward the Foundation’s investments strategy. He’s an independent director of Invesco Mutual Funds and an independent director of the Office of Finance of the Federal Home Loan Bank System. Prior to his career in investment banking, he served as an aide to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and spent five years in corporate law practice.

The great nephew of the Foundation’s founders Frank and Anna Greenwall, Dr. Salzer is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery practicing at Englewood Orthopedic Associates in New Jersey. He thoughtfully contributed his experience as a practicing physician to every aspect of his roles on the Board. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and served as the orthopedic surgeon for Farleigh Dickinson University’s Varsity Division I Athletic Teams.

Dr. Grady brought decades of experience as a nurse and bioethics expert to her role on the FSP Committee, which provides oversight and direction for the Foundation’s flagship program. She is the former Chief of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center and served as a commissioner on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues from 2010 to 2017. She is an elected fellow of the Hastings Center and the American Academy of Nursing, a senior research fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.

“Joel, Richard, and Christine provided invaluable wisdom and experience overseeing the Foundation and guiding the Faculty Scholars Program through periods of transition and growth. They brought unparalleled kindness, diligence, and dedication to their roles,” said Michelle Groman, JD, President & CEO.

As Dr. Grady departs the FSP Committee, Scott Y.H. Kim, MD, PhD, joins it with over 25 years of experience as a bioethics researcher, professor, and psychiatrist. He is a Senior Investigator for the NIH Department of Bioethics and studies research ethics, especially the ethics of involving decisionally impaired persons in research, the ethics of high-risk research, and methodological issues in empirical bioethics research. Prior to the NIH, Dr. Kim was Professor of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Kim’s work has been supported by grants from a variety of organizations, including the Michael J. Fox Foundation, American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, and The Greenwall Foundation (Faculty Scholars Program, Class of 2009). His work has appeared in New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, JAMA, and other key journals, and he published a book, Evaluation of Capacity to Consent to Treatment and Research (Oxford), in 2010.

“I’m thrilled that Scott will be joining the Faculty Scholars Program Committee. He brings a critical perspective to the group, with his multidisciplinary expertise and close familiarity with the Program as one of its early Alums,” Ms. Groman remarked.

Please join us in thanking Mr. Motley, Dr. Salzer, and Dr. Grady for their years of service to the Foundation and welcoming aboard Dr. Kim.
