The Kornfeld Program in Bioethics and Patient Care
June 2009

Margaret van der Velden, MD, Assistant in Critical Care Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston, was awarded a grant in the amount of $60,000, funded in part by The Kornfeld Program in Bioethics and Patient Care ($30,000), to support the project, Factors Associated with the Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Treatment in Neurologically Injured Patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Questions of how physicians assess the neurological prognosis of patients and use this information in making recommendations about life support have become increasingly important, even urgent, and is the focus of this project.
